The UK and US have announced a significant commercial pact that will guarantee zero levies on British drug shipments going into the American market.
Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to raise spending on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This pledge ensures that tariffs on these crucial exports will remain at zero for a duration of the next three years.
This agreement comes after earlier threats to dramatically increase tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products, with figures floated up to one hundred percent.
"This arrangement between the United Kingdom bolsters the international landscape for new treatments and brings much-needed equity to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.
Medicines constitute one of the the United Kingdom's biggest export categories to the America, which is by far the largest buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.
Export figures indicate that in the 12 months prior to the third quarter, the UK sold medicines totaling over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure made up nearly one-fifth of British export trade in that span.
"This deal safeguards work, boosts investment and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.
The agreement includes several notable pledges from the British government:

The disagreement were intensified by claims that US patients were charged several times more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.
In recent months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major investments have been directed toward US facilities.
A senior figure acknowledged that the NHS needed to spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
