The British broadcaster was found to have committed a "serious breach" of broadcasting rules by failing to disclose that the narrator of a film about the Gaza situation was the offspring of a Hamas official, according to British broadcasting authority Ofcom.
An investigation by Ofcom into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the documentary was "substantially inaccurate".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had previously apologised, saying there had been "a major oversight in relation to factual correctness".
The regulator has directed the corporation to transmit a evening announcement about its findings.
"Since this amounts to a serious breach of our code, we are instructing the broadcaster to air a statement of our conclusions against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a schedule to be determined," the regulator stated.
The watchdog's announcement said: "Our investigation concluded that the programme's lack of disclosure that the presenter's father held a post in the Hamas-run administration was significantly deceptive.
"This implied that the audience did not have critical information which may have been highly relevant to their evaluation of the voice and the information he shared.
"Credibility is at the center of the bond between a television network and its public, notably for a national broadcasting corporation such as the public broadcaster.
"This failing had the possibility to erode the significantly high levels of confidence that viewers would have placed in a BBC factual programme about the Israel-Gaza war."
The programme was pulled from iPlayer in February after the presenter's family links were revealed, and in the month of July an corporation's own inquiry determined it infringed the organization's content policies on accuracy.
A corporation official stated: "The regulator's decision is in accordance with the results of Peter Johnston's review, that there was a significant failing in the programme in relation to the corporation's content standards on accuracy, which reflects regulation 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.
"We have apologised for this and we comply with the authority's determination in its entirety. We will adhere to the sanction as soon as the timing and wording are finalised."
