Government Official Confirms MoD Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defence minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified information in all cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The wider defence environment highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of government activities, including transport use to communication practices.
