It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until April, when the next major arc begins.
From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
The series anime had a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
