The speculation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
