The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
