Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis show the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
A senior official said the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
